Fenwick Bulmer de Sales La Terriere (1856–1925) was an important officer in the British Army. He reached the rank of Colonel and was also a recognized author. He was even given a special honor called the Order of the Medjidie.

Early Life and Education

Fenwick Bulmer de Sales La Terriere was born in 1856. His birthplace was Alstone Lawn in Gloucestershire, England. He came from a family that claimed to be part of the French nobility. This means his family believed they were descended from important French aristocrats.

He received a good education. He studied at famous schools like Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford. He also attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. This academy is a special place where people learn to become officers in the army.

A Career in the Army

After his education, Fenwick joined the British Army. He served in several different units.

  • He started in the 5th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.
  • Later, he became a Captain in the 18th Hussars.
  • He worked his way up through the ranks.
  • Eventually, he became a Lieutenant-colonel.
  • He later achieved the rank of Colonel.

From 1902, he also served as an Exon. This was a special role in the King's Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard. This group protects the British monarch.

In 1924, Fenwick Bulmer de Sales La Terriere published his autobiography. An autobiography is a book where someone writes about their own life. His book was called Days that Are Gone. The full title was Days that Are Gone, being the Recollections of some Seventy Years of the Life of a very ordinary Gentleman and his Friends in Three Reigns.

The book shared his memories from about 70 years of his life. It covered his experiences during the reigns of three different British monarchs. The book received good reviews, including in The Times newspaper.
