History of Bunschoten
Bunschoten was first mentioned in official records in 1294. It was located right on the border between the province of Utrecht and the region of Guelders. Because of its location, Bunschoten often faced attacks from Guelders.
In 1383, the bishop of Utrecht gave Bunschoten special city rights. These rights allowed the people of Bunschoten to build a protective earthen wall around their town. However, during a war between two rival bishops, the fortifications and part of the town were destroyed at Christmas in 1427. Sadly, they were never rebuilt after that.
