Burchell was once a small community in Merced County, California. It is now considered a "former settlement." This means it was a place where people lived or worked, but it no longer exists as a town or village today. Burchell was located about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) southeast of a town called Planada.

Where Was Burchell Located?

Burchell was found in the central part of California, specifically in Merced County. It was situated along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. This railroad was very important for travel and moving goods across the United States. The settlement was at an elevation of 236 feet (72 meters) above sea level.

Why Did Burchell Disappear?

Many small settlements like Burchell were created to support railroads or farming in a specific area. If the railroad changed its route, or if farming conditions changed, these small places might not have had a reason to continue. Burchell still appeared on maps made by the USGS (a government agency that studies the Earth) as late as 1918. This suggests it was active for some time before it faded away.
