Burntside Lodge is a special resort located on the beautiful Burntside Lake in Morse Township, Minnesota. It's near the city of Ely. This historic place has been open for more than 100 years!

How Burntside Lodge Started

Burntside Lodge began a long time ago, in the early 1900s. It was first known as the Brownell Outing Company. Back then, it was a simple camp for hunting. Part of the main lodge building was built during this time.

Around 1913, two brothers, William A. and Lyman Alden, bought the property. They had a vision for the place. The Alden brothers then created what we know today as Burntside Lodge.

The Lodge's Family History

In 1941, Ray and Nancy LaMontagne bought the resort from the Alden brothers. They worked hard and managed the lodge for 42 years. Even today, many years later, the LaMontagne family still owns and runs Burntside Lodge.

As of 2019, Ray and Nancy's son, Lou, operates the lodge with his wife, Lonnie. Their adult children, Nicole and Jacques, also help out. It's truly a family business!

A Special Historic Place

Burntside Lodge is very important because of its history and unique buildings. In 1988, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a special historic district in the United States.

It was chosen for this honor for a few reasons. It was the very first large commercial resort in northern St. Louis County. Also, it has the best collection of log resort buildings in the area.

What the Lodge Looks Like

The resort has 23 cozy cabins for guests to stay in. These cabins are all different in their design, size, and where they are located. Many of them were built in the 1920s.

They were made using local wood from the area. Inside, the cabins have wood floors and knotty pine walls, giving them a rustic feel. People who study historic places say these buildings are amazing. They were built by local craftspeople and are still in great condition today.
