Burton Denis Metcalfe (born March 19, 1935 – died July 27, 2022) was a talented Canadian-American who worked in many parts of television and film. He was a producer, director, writer, and actor. He is most famous for his work on the popular TV show M*A*S*H.

About Burt Metcalfe
Burt Metcalfe was born in Saskatoon, Canada. He grew up in Montreal before moving to Los Angeles. In 1955, he earned a degree in theater from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Early Career and Military Service
In 1956, Burt joined the United States Navy for two years. He worked in public relations at a base called Ream Field. This base was known as the "helicopter capital of the world." While there, he helped create a "Miss Angel" beauty contest. "Angel" was a Navy term for a helicopter that rescued pilots.
Acting Roles in TV and Film
Burt Metcalfe had several acting roles early in his career. In 1959, he appeared in the movie Gidget. He played a character named Lord Byron, an "existentialist surfer."
That same year, he was in a TV show called Death Valley Days. He played a young United States Army officer. In 1960, he had a role in an episode of The Twilight Zone. This episode was titled "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street."
From 1960 to 1962, Burt also starred in two sitcoms. He was in Happy on NBC and Father of the Bride on CBS. He also made three guest appearances on the popular show Perry Mason.
Working on M*A*S*H
Burt Metcalfe's most important work was on the hit CBS series M*A*S*H. This show was about a team of doctors and support staff during the Korean War. He was the only producer who stayed with the show for its entire run. This was from 1972 to 1983.
He started as an associate producer. Then, he was promoted to line producer in 1976. In 1977, he became the executive producer. After M*A*S*H ended, he worked for other TV companies.
Achievements and Awards
Burt Metcalfe was recognized many times for his work on M*A*S*H. He was nominated for 13 Primetime Emmy Awards. These nominations were for his writing and producing on the series.
He also helped create the M*A*S*H 30th Anniversary Reunion Special. This special show aired in 2002. It brought the cast and crew back together to celebrate the show.
Personal Life
Burt Metcalfe was married twice. He first married Toby Richman, and they later divorced. On December 31, 1979, he married actress Jan Jorden. Jan Jorden was also known for playing a nurse on M*A*S*H.
Burt Metcalfe passed away on July 27, 2022. He was 87 years old.
