Burton Fleming is an exciting archaeological site in East Riding of Yorkshire. It's a place where ancient people from the Iron Age buried their dead. This site is part of what archaeologists call the Arras culture.

The site is named after the village of Burton Fleming, where this old cemetery is found. It's also connected to other Iron Age burial mounds, called barrows, near Rudston. Archaeologists have found 22 burials at a spot called Argam Lane and 42 more at Bell Slack.

Discovering Ancient Burials

Archaeologists study old sites to learn about how people lived long ago. At Burton Fleming, they found many ancient graves. These graves tell us about the burial customs of the Iron Age people who lived here.

Argam Lane Discoveries

In 1972, archaeologists dug up 22 special burial mounds at Argam Lane. These mounds were shaped like squares. Each square mound had a main grave in the middle. Inside these graves, they found human remains.

  • Most of the bodies were placed in a crouched or bent position.
  • Many were lined up from north to south.
  • Some graves had special items, called grave goods.
  • These items included clay pots, metal pins (brooches) made of copper or iron, and even sheep bones.
  • One female skeleton had a bracelet made of shale on her arm.

Bell Slack Discoveries

In 1977, more burials were found at a place called Bell Slack. This happened while archaeologists were working on an old road, or droveway, from the Romano-British period. The burial sites were about 400 meters apart.

In 1978, 42 burials were carefully dug up. Some of these graves had already been disturbed by later Roman ditches.

  • Most of the skeletons were found in a crouched or bent position, just like at Argam Lane.
  • However, a few bodies were found stretched out.
  • Grave goods here also included clay pots and metal brooches.
  • They also found pig or sheep bones.
  • One male skeleton was found with an iron knife and an iron spearhead.
  • One grave was special because it held two skeletons: an adult female and a teenager.
  • This grave also had various copper-alloy items, like beads, a brooch, and a shale ring.
