Buseje Bailey is a Canadian artist and curator. She creates art using video and many other types of media. Her artwork often explores what it means to be Black when your family comes from different parts of the world. She also looks at themes of women's history. Her video art is shared by a company called Vtape in Toronto. In 2018, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation recognized her as a very important Black Canadian artist.

Learning and Early Life

Buseje Bailey studied art at two universities. She earned her first degree (BFA) from York University in Toronto in 1981. Later, she received her master's degree (MFA) from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1991.

Art Shows and Exhibitions

Buseje Bailey's art has been shown in many places. She had solo exhibitions, which means shows just for her art. These included "Body Politics" at McGill University in 1994. Another was "Making Connections Across Art Forms" in 1995 in Halifax. The Women's Art Resource Centre also showed her work in 1999. This exhibition was called "The Viewing Room." Her art was also part of a show called "Black Body: Race, Resistance, Response" in 2001. This show was organized by Pamela Edmonds at the Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax.

Bailey helped start a group called the Diasporic African Women's Art Collective (DAWA). In 1989, she helped organize an important group exhibition. It was called "Black Wimmin: When and Where We Enter." She also showed her own art in this exhibition. This was the first art show in Canada that was all about art made by Black women. The show traveled to different places across Canada. It became a very important starting point for other Black women artists and people who organize art shows.

In 1998, Bailey's art was shown with Walter Redinger's art. This exhibition took place at the McIntosh Gallery at the University of Western Ontario.

Buseje Bailey was also featured in a 2017 exhibition. This show was called "Light Grows the Tree" at the BAND Gallery in Toronto. It showed photos of important Black Canadian artists, writers, and art collectors.
