Pamela Edmonds facts for kids

Pamela Edmonds is a Canadian expert who organizes art shows. She is called a "curator." She focuses on how art can help us understand different cultures and histories. She also looks at how Black people are shown in art. Many people see her as a very important person in the Black Canadian art world. Since 2022, she has been in charge of the Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Pamela Edmonds' Career

Pamela Edmonds is a curator who organizes art shows. She cares about how different groups of people are shown in art. She is a very important person in the Black Canadian art scene. Before her current role, she was a Senior Curator at the McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario. She was born in Montreal, Quebec. She studied Art History at Concordia University, earning two degrees there.

Pamela started her career in Halifax in 1998. She helped create an art show called Skin: A Political Boundary. This show was at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Since then, Edmonds has been a key person in the Black Canadian art world. In 2019, she worked with other important Black Canadian curators. They included Julie Crooks, Dominique Fontaine, and Gaëtane Verna. Together, they started the first Black Curators Forum.

After working for many years in Toronto, Ontario, at the Thames Art Gallery, Edmonds became a senior curator. She moved to the McMaster Museum of Art. This made her one of the few Black curators in senior roles in Canadian museums.

Pamela's work with others has led to important art shows. These shows feature Black Canadian art from the 2000s. She worked with the Sister Visions collective. They organized Through Our Eyes at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax. Later, she worked at A Space Gallery in Toronto. She also worked at the Art Gallery of Peterborough as a curator and director. In 2009, Edmonds helped start Third Space Art Projects. This is a group of curators she co-leads with Sally Frater.

In 2014, Edmonds helped guide new curators. This was part of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries (OAAG). Her work still focuses on decolonization. This means looking at art in ways that challenge old colonial ideas. She also focuses on art made by Black Canadians.
