Pamela Edmonds' Early Life and Education

Pamela Edmonds grew up in Montreal, Quebec. She studied Art History at Concordia University. There, she earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and a Master of Arts (MA). Her master's research looked at how Black identity is shown in Canadian art.

Starting Her Career in Art

Pamela Edmonds began her career in Halifax in 1998. She helped create an art show called Skin: A Political Boundary. This show was at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Since then, she has been a key person in the Black Canadian art community.

Important Roles and Projects

Pamela Edmonds has worked in many important art places. She was the Senior Curator at the McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario. This was a big step, as few Black curators hold such senior roles in Canadian museums.

In 2019, she helped start the Black Curators Forum. This group brings together Black Canadian curators. They work to support each other and share ideas. Other important curators like Julie Crooks and Dominique Fontaine were also part of this.

Working with Others

Pamela Edmonds often works with other artists and curators. She helped organize Through Our Eyes at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. She also worked at A Space Gallery in Toronto. Later, she became the curator and director at the Art Gallery of Peterborough.

In 2009, she co-founded Third Space Art Projects. This is a group of curators who work together on different art projects. She leads this group with Sally Frater.

Focusing on Important Themes

Pamela Edmonds' work often explores themes of decolonization. This means looking at how art can challenge old ways of thinking. She also focuses on art made by Black Canadian artists. In 2014, she mentored new curators through the Ontario Association of Art Galleries.
