Butler Lake is a small, peaceful lake located in Herkimer County, New York. You can find it south of the town of Wilmurt. This lake is known for its natural beauty and for being a special home to some amazing birds.
All About Butler Lake
Butler Lake is not a very large lake. It covers about 11 acres of water. To give you an idea, that's roughly the size of 11 football fields! The lake sits at an elevation of about 679 feet above sea level.
The water from Butler Lake flows north. It goes into a small, unnamed creek. This creek then joins a larger waterway called West Canada Creek. Just to the east of Butler Lake, you'll find another body of water called Atwood Lake.
Home to Loons
One of the most exciting things about Butler Lake is that it's a favorite spot for a pair of common loons. These beautiful birds travel to the lake every spring. They come here to build their nests and raise their young chicks.
Loons are special birds that need a lot of open water. They use this "runway" to take off into the sky. Butler Lake is just big enough for them to get the space they need for their flights. Watching these elegant birds on the water is a real treat!
