An example of a butter burger

A butter burger is a special kind of hamburger. It has butter added to it. Sometimes the butter is put right on the meat patty. Other times, it's spread on the bun. These tasty burgers are very popular. You can find them especially in the midwestern United States. They are a big deal in Wisconsin. Many restaurants in and around Wisconsin serve butter burgers. The fast food restaurant Culver's is famous for its butter burgers.

The Story of the Butter Burger

How It All Began

The butter burger has a long history. It likely started way back in 1885. A man named Charlie Nagreen was at a fair. This fair was in a town called Seymour, Wisconsin. Charlie cooked his hamburgers in butter. This made them extra delicious. Many people say this was the very first butter burger!

Becoming Famous

Years later, two restaurants helped make butter burgers famous. These were Solly's Grille and Krolls'. They started serving them in 1936. Both places put a pat of butter right on the burger patty. They did this while the burger was cooking. This made the meat super juicy and flavorful.

Modern Butter Burgers

Today, a well-known fast food chain serves butter burgers. It's called Culver's. Culver's started in 1984. They do things a little differently. Instead of putting butter on the patty, they butter the top bun. This gives their burgers a unique taste.

Other restaurants have also made their own butter burgers. In 2009, Steak 'n Shake introduced their "Wisconsin Buttery Steakburger". It had butter from Wisconsin and American cheese. Later, in 2015, Jack in the Box created the "Classic Buttery Jack". This burger featured garlic herb butter melted onto the patty.
