The Butterworth Squadron was a group of three British ships. They were called Butterworth, Jackal, and Prince Lee Boo. These ships set sail from London in late 1791. Their journey took them around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This expedition was a commercial venture, meaning it was set up for business.

The Butterworth Squadron: An Adventure at Sea

This group of ships was funded by important people. These included Alderman William Curtis, a London ship-owner named Theophilus Pritzler, and likely John Perry. John Perry was a shipbuilder from Blackwall.

Who Led the Expedition?

The leader of this exciting journey was Captain William Brown. He was an experienced whaling captain. He had worked in the Greenland whale fishery before.

The Expedition's Surgeon and Artist

The expedition also had a surgeon named Sigismund Bacstrom. He was also a naturalist. Bacstrom had previously worked as a secretary for Sir Joseph Banks. During the first part of the voyage, Bacstrom created many drawings. Some of these drawings still exist today.

Exploring New Lands and Facing Challenges

The Butterworth Squadron's journey was full of important moments. They were among the first European ships to enter Honolulu Harbor. This was a big step in exploring the Pacific.

Encounters on the Journey

The expedition faced some challenges during their travels. They had a conflict with the Tla-o-qui-aht People on Vancouver Island. There was also another reported conflict in Taiwan. These events show some of the difficulties early explorers faced.

The Ships in Hawaiian History

The ships Jackal and Prince Lee Boo played a part in Hawaiian history. They were involved in a power struggle on the island of Oahu. This was between Kalanikupule and his uncle Ka'eokulani.

Key Events in Hawaii

During this time, an unfortunate event occurred. A shot fired from one of these ships led to the death of John Kendrick. He was a captain aboard another ship called Lady Washington. The ships also participated in a planned attack on Kamehameha by Kalanikupule. However, this attack did not happen.
