The Byham Theater is a historic building in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is located in the city's Cultural District. This theater is a popular spot for live performances today.
The building first opened in 1904. It was originally called The Gayety Theater. Back then, it was a "vaudeville" house. Vaudeville was a type of entertainment with many different acts. These acts included singers, dancers, comedians, and magicians. Famous stars like Ethel Barrymore and Helen Hayes performed there. In the 1930s, the theater changed its name to The Fulton. It became a movie theater. A well-known horror movie, Night of the Living Dead, had its first showing there in 1968. In 1990, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust bought the theater. They fixed it up as part of their plan for the Cultural District. In 1995, Carolyn M. Byham and William C. Byham made a big donation. Because of their gift, the theater was renamed The Byham Theater.
A Special Baseball Game Showing
The Byham Theater hosted a very special event in 2010. It was the 50th anniversary of a famous baseball moment. This moment was Bill Mazeroski's game-winning home run in the 1960 World Series. For many years, the TV recording of Game 7 of that series was thought to be lost. But in December 2009, the tape was found!
On November 13, 2010, the Byham Theater showed this historic game to the public for the first time. Famous sports announcer Bob Costas hosted the event. Bill Mazeroski was there, along with other players from that game. These included Pirates MVP Dick Groat and former Yankee Bobby Richardson. They were interviewed during the game showing. Later, MLB Network showed the game and interviews on national television.
