Byramjee Jeejeebhoy (1822–1890) was an important Indian businessman. He was also a kind person who helped others, known as a philanthropist. Byramjee Jeejeebhoy started many schools and colleges in Mumbai, which was then called Bombay. He wanted to make sure more people could get an education.

Some of the famous schools and colleges he founded include:

  • The Byramjee Jeejeebhoy College
  • The Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Parsee Charitable Institution in Charni Road, South Mumbai
  • The Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College in Pune
  • The B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad

In October 1830, the British East India Company gave Byramjee a special lease. This lease included seven villages located between Jogeshwari and Borivali. These villages covered a huge area, more than 12,000 acres (about 48 square kilometers). He also received Land's End, Bandra. This is a piece of land shaped like a cape, where the old Bandra Fort stands. This area became known as the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Point. He paid a yearly rent of 2800 rupees for it. Byramjee built a beautiful, large house on the hill overlooking the fort. This was his personal home.

Byramjee Jeejeebhoy's Contributions to Mumbai

Byramjee Jeejeebhoy made many important contributions to the city of Mumbai. He was not just a successful businessman. He used his wealth to improve the lives of many people. His focus on education helped countless students.

Building the Bandstand Road

Byramjee Jeejeebhoy also paid to build a road in Bandra. This road runs along the sea and is named Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Road. It stretches from St. Andrews to Land's End. He paid for this road himself, and it was opened for public use in 1878. You can still see a stone that records this event. It is located where Jeejeebhoy Road and Bhaba Road meet in Bandra.

Honoring Byramjee Jeejeebhoy

Byramjee Jeejeebhoy's legacy lives on in many ways. A famous horse racing prize is named after him. It is called the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Eclipse Stakes Of India. This shows how important he was in his time.
