Cápac Yupanqui: A Powerful Inca Leader
Cápac Yupanqui was known as a great conqueror. Some stories say he was the first Inca ruler to expand the kingdom. He conquered lands outside the main valley of Cusco. This made his rule very important for the Inca Empire.
His Family and Successors
Cápac Yupanqui was the son of Mayta Cápac, who was also a Sapa Inca. Cápac Yupanqui took over as ruler after his father. His older brother, Cunti Mayta, became a high priest.
Cápac Yupanqui's main wife was Mama Cusi Hilpay. She was the daughter of a lord from Anta. This family used to be a big enemy of the Incas.
He also had a son named Inca Roca with a woman named Cusi Chimbo. Inca Roca later became a Sapa Inca himself. He started a new family line called the Hanan dynasty.
Expanding the Inca Kingdom
Cápac Yupanqui was a strong leader who expanded the Inca lands. He brought the Cuyumarca and Ancasmarca regions under Inca control. This helped the Kingdom of Cusco grow larger and more powerful.
Historians like Garcilaso de la Vega wrote about Cápac Yupanqui's achievements. He said that Cápac Yupanqui made many improvements to the city of Cusco. He built new buildings, bridges, and roads. He also created aqueducts to bring water to the city. These projects helped the city become even better.
Cápac Yupanqui died around the year 1350. His rule was a key time for the Inca kingdom. He helped set the stage for the even larger Inca Empire that would come later.
