Mayta Cápac was an important leader of the ancient Inca people. He was the fourth Sapa Inca, which means "great leader" or "emperor," of the Kingdom of Cuzco. He belonged to the Hurin family line, or dynasty. He ruled from about 1290 CE to 1320 CE.

Mayta Cápac's Family

Mayta Cápac was the son of King Lloque Yupanqui. He became the next Sapa Inca after his father. His own son, Cápac Yupanqui, later became the Sapa Inca too.

Mayta Cápac's wife was named Mama Cuca. He also had other children named Tarco Huaman, Apu Cunti Mayta, Queco Avcaylli, and Rocca Yupanqui. His mother was Mama Cora Ocllo Coya, who passed away in Cuzco.

What He Did as King

Mayta Cápac is remembered as someone who helped improve the calendar. This was very important for farming and knowing when to hold special events.

Some old stories say he was a great warrior. They say he conquered lands far away, like near Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, and Potosí. However, at that time, the Inca kingdom was mostly still around the valley of Cuzco.

Even so, Mayta Cápac did achieve important military victories. He brought the Alcabisas and Culunchimas tribes under Inca control. This helped make the Kingdom of Cuzco stronger.
