In 1855, Charles Coppedge opened the very first store. This store was in a community called Smyrna. Smyrna is located in Harrison County, Texas. This shows he was an early settler and helped build up the area.

Serving in the Military

In 1862, when the American Civil War was happening, Charles Coppedge joined the army. He became part of the 19th Texas Infantry. He was chosen to be a junior second lieutenant. In this role, he was in charge of "ordnance." This means he was responsible for military supplies, like weapons and ammunition.

A Career in Politics

After the war ended, Charles Coppedge continued to serve his community. In 1865, he was elected to the Texas State Senate. The Texas State Senate is a group of elected officials who help make laws for the state of Texas. He served in what was known as the Eleventh Texas Legislature.

Family and Legacy

Charles Coppedge was married three times during his life. He had a very large family, with 20 children. Many of his family members, known as descendants, still live in the East Texas area today. This is the same area where he lived and worked. Charles Coppedge passed away in Ore City, Texas, in 1898.
