Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The CBS/Fox Company, also known as CBS/Fox Video, was an important company that made and sold movies and TV shows for people to watch at home. It was created in 1982 when two big companies, CBS and 20th Century Fox, decided to work together. They each owned half of the new company.

What Was CBS/Fox Video?

CBS/Fox Video was a company focused on home video. This means they put movies and TV shows onto formats like VHS tapes and later DVDs, so people could buy or rent them to watch at home. Before home video, you mostly had to go to a movie theater or watch TV when a show was on.

How Did It Start?

In 1982, CBS and 20th Century Fox joined forces. They created CBS/Fox Video as a 50-50 partnership. This allowed them to share their movies and TV shows for the growing home video market.

Growing Bigger

By 1985, CBS/Fox Video became even more important. They got the rights to release many films from the British Broadcasting Corporation in North America. The BBC is a very famous TV and radio company from the United Kingdom. This meant CBS/Fox could offer even more popular content to its customers.

Market Share and Money

In 1989, CBS/Fox Video was a big player in the home video world. They had about 6.5% of the entire market for home videos. This means that out of all the home videos sold, 6.5% came from CBS/Fox. Their total money earned, called revenues, was around $249 million that year.

A Special Label: Playhouse Video

CBS/Fox Video had a special sub-label called Playhouse Video. This label was used for certain types of content. For example, a series of popular programs from Mr. Rogers, known for Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, started to be released under the Playhouse label in 1986. These shows were perfect for younger audiences.

The End of an Era

Over time, the roles of CBS and 20th Century Fox in CBS/Fox Video changed. Eventually, in 1998, CBS/Fox Video became a part of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. This meant that the CBS/Fox brand was no longer used, and its operations were fully taken over by 20th Century Fox's own home video division.
