The Start of the Team
The story of Club Baloncesto Aismalíbar began in 1947. The Aismalíbar company, which made electrical insulation, started a social club for its workers. These employees loved basketball and formed a team.
They first played in a league for workers. After doing very well there, the company decided to enter the team into the official Catalan Basketball Federation. The team was named CB Aismalíbar. They quickly won championships in the Second and First Regional Catalan leagues.
A Golden Age for Aismalíbar
In the 1950s, the Aismalíbar company invested a lot of money in the team. They wanted to make it a top club. This was partly to advertise their business. It was also because basketball was becoming very popular in Montcada.
The club hired famous players and coaches. One key person was Eduardo Kucharski, who was both a player and a coach. They also brought in amazing players like Emiliano Rodriguez. He later became a legend at Real Madrid. Francesc Nino Buscató and Francisco Borrell also joined. Borrell was the first player in Spanish basketball history to be taller than two meters!
Big Games and Achievements
Aismalíbar Moncada became the champion of Catalonia. They were very strong, but they never won a major national title. However, they came very close! They were runners-up four times in the Generalissimo Cup. This was a big national competition. They reached the final in 1956, 1957, 1959, and 1964.
In the 1956-1957 season, Aismalíbar was one of the six founding teams of the main Spanish basketball league. This showed how important they were.
One of their most famous wins happened in 1957. They played in a tournament in Sicily, Italy. There, they beat Sparta Prague 77-73. This was a huge deal because Sparta Prague was from the communist bloc. Aismalíbar was the first team from Western Europe to defeat a team from that region.
The End of an Era
The club's success began to fade. New rules meant teams had to play their games in indoor arenas. Aismalíbar's home court in Montcada was outdoors. The company could not afford to build a roof over their court.
So, the team had to play their games at the Palacio de los Deportes in Barcelona. This was far from Montcada. The club also had to sell its best players. Sadly, Club Baloncesto Aismalíbar finally closed down at the end of the 1963-1964 season.
In 1979, a new basketball club was started in Montcada. It was called Club Bàsquet Montcada. This new club tried to fill the gap left by Aismalíbar. However, it has never reached the top level of Spanish basketball like Aismalíbar once did.
