The CSS George Page was a special kind of boat called a sidewheel steamship. It weighed 410 tons. This ship was built in Washington, D.C. in 1853. It was first used to carry supplies and people.
Early Service and Capture
The George Page first worked for the United States Army. It was part of the Quartermaster's Department. This department was in charge of supplies and transportation.
In May 1861, the ship was captured by the Confederates. This happened near Aquia Creek, Virginia. After being captured, the George Page joined the Virginia State Navy.
Confederate Service
In June 1861, Virginia gave its ships to the Confederate States Navy. The George Page became part of this navy. Lieutenant Charles Carroll Simms was its commander.
The ship was then prepared for river defense. This meant it would help protect rivers. Around this time, it was renamed City of Richmond. Some parts of its upper deck might have been removed.
The George Page operated in the Potomac River. It stayed near Quantico Creek. On July 7, 1861, another ship, the USS Pocahontas, fired at it. The George Page was damaged by this attack.
Final Fate
On March 9, 1862, the Confederate forces left their positions at Evansport. The crew of the George Page destroyed their own ship. They burned it to keep it from falling into enemy hands.
