Caazapá is an important city in Paraguay. It was founded a long time ago, in 1607, by a friar named Luis de Bolaños. Today, Caazapá is the main city and capital of the Caazapá Department.
The city has five main areas, called "Barrios" or neighborhoods. The biggest one is Barrio San Pablo. The other four are Barrio Santa Teresita, Barrio San Blás, Barrio San Antonio, and Barrio San Roque. In Barrio San Roque, you can find the very first chapel. It was built by Franciscan friars when Spain ruled Paraguay. The work of the Franciscans in Caazapá was a big part of Paraguay's history and culture.
When you visit Caazapá, you can see several interesting places. There's the main Church, the Ykua Bolaños (which is a beautiful lagoon), and the Juan Bernardo Museum. This museum holds a special cross. It is said to be the cross where the missionary Juan Bernardo Colman was killed.
What Does "Caazapá" Mean?
The name "Caazapá" comes from the Spanish mission that was first set up here. This mission belonged to the Franciscan Order. In the old Classical Guarani language, "Caaçapá" meant "the place after the forest."
This name came from a belief held by the local people. They thought that beyond a certain forest, God had made water appear. They believed this happened through Friar Luis de Bolaños.
