Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Paraguay is a country in South America. It is divided into 17 main areas called departments. Think of them like states or provinces in other countries. There's also one special area, the capital district, called Distrito Capital, where the main city of Asunción is located. Each department is made up of smaller areas called districts.

These departments are grouped into two big geographic regions. A major river, the Paraguay River, separates these two regions:

  • The Occidental (Western) region, also known as the Chaco. This part is to the north of the Paraguay River. It includes three departments: Alto Paraguay, Boquerón, and Presidente Hayes.
  • The Oriental (Eastern) region. This area is to the south of the Paraguay River. Most of Paraguay's departments are in this region. The capital district is also part of the Oriental region.

Each department has its own capital city. These capitals are important centers for the people living in that department. The table below shows the departments, their capital cities, and how many people lived there in 2012. It also shows the size of each department and how many smaller districts it has.
