History of Caaguazú
The area that is now Caaguazú has a long history. In 1712, a town called Villa de San Isidro Labrador de Curuguaty was started. Later, other towns like Ybytimí (in 1715), San Joaquín (in 1746), and Carayaó (in 1770) were also founded.
The department of Caaguazú was officially created in 1906. Back then, it was called Yhú, and the town of Yhú was its capital. Other towns in the department included Ajos (which is now Coronel Oviedo), Carayaó, San Joaquín, and Caaguazú itself.
In 1945, the department's borders were changed, and it was given its current name, Caaguazú. Its exact boundaries were set in 1973.
