Coronel Oviedo, often called just Oviedo, is a lively city in the middle of eastern Paraguay. It's the main city of the Caaguazú Department. Imagine it as a busy crossroads, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. The city was founded a long time ago, in 1758.
The city has about 52,400 people living there (as of 2006). It is also the hometown of Nicanor Duarte Frutos, who used to be the president of Paraguay. Coronel Oviedo is a very important place for travel. It sits right in the middle of the journey between Asunción and Ciudad del Este. Plus, it's where three major highways meet: Ruta 2, Ruta 7, and Ruta 8.
The city is known as the "Capital of Work." In Spanish, this is capital de trabajo. This nickname shows how important hard work and business are to the people who live here.
A City with a Changing Name
When Coronel Oviedo was first founded, it had a different name. It was called "Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Ajos." This means "Our Lady of the Rosary of Garlic." Why garlic? Because growing garlic was a very important crop for the people living there. It was a big part of their trade and economy.
In 1931, the government of Paraguay decided to change the city's name. They renamed it Coronel Oviedo to honor Cnel Florentin Oviedo. He was a hero from the War of the Triple Alliance. After the war, Oviedo lived in Ajos until he passed away in 1935. The city's new name remembers his bravery and his connection to the area.
The city is also home to the main church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Coronel Oviedo.
