Early Beginnings

The town was first known as Amancio Cué. In 1786, a Jesuit mission was started here by Father Juan Francisco Amancio González y Escobar. It was called Reducción Melodía, named after Governor Pedro Melo.

Changing Names and New Starts

The town was later rebuilt between 1841 and 1862. It was renamed Nueva Burdeos (New Bordeaux) by 120 French families who settled there. But this settlement did not last.

The next year, it was founded again as Villa Occidental (Western Town). In the late 1860s, during the Paraguayan War, Argentine soldiers occupied the city and called it Villa Argentina.

The Name Villa Hayes

Finally, the city was named Villa Hayes on May 13, 1879. This name honored American President Rutherford Hayes. On November 13, 1878, he was asked to help settle a land dispute between Paraguay and Argentina after the Paraguayan War.

President Hayes decided that the disputed Gran Chaco region belonged to Paraguay. This made him a national hero in Paraguay.

On November 12, 2018, Villa Hayes became a sister city with Fremont, Ohio. Fremont is where President Hayes lived and is buried.
