What's in the Name?
The name Cabanillas del Monte has a cool history! Back in 1247, it was called Cabaniellas del Monte. Later, in 1752, it was known as Cabañuelas.
The word "Cabanillas" comes from an old Latin word, capannelas. This means a small cabin or a farm where animals like cattle are kept. Even today, some old houses with big yards in mountain villages are called "cabins."
In the early 1900s, there was a special place here called the Rancho de la Marquesa. It was one of the few places left where sheep were sheared (their wool was cut off). The "Monte" part of the name simply means "mountain" or "forest." This tells us the village is located near a mountain or a wooded area.
Where is Cabanillas del Monte?
Cabanillas del Monte is easy to find! You can get there by taking the P-6121 road. This road connects La Granja de San Ildefonso with the N-110 in Torrecaballeros.
The village has neighbors all around it. To the north, you'll find Espirdo and Torrecaballeros. To the south, it borders Trescasas. If you go east, you'll reach the province of Madrid. To the west, it's next to Tizneros.
Nature Around Cabanillas
The area around Cabanillas del Monte is full of nature. You'll mostly see green grasslands. There are also many thorny bushes. You might spot a few small oak trees and pine forests that have been replanted.
For those who love plants, there are some nice aromatic species. These include salsero thyme, white thyme, and lavender.
Cool Places to See
Cabanillas del Monte has some interesting historical places:
- Cabanillas Shearing House: This old building was built in the 1500s and fixed up in the 1700s. It was once a place where sheep were sheared. Today, it's a private farmhouse used for parties and events. It was even declared an important cultural site in 1997!
- Iglesia de San Miguel: This is a beautiful old church from the 1200s. It has a Romanesque style, which means it's very old and sturdy. Some parts were added later in the Renaissance style.
- Rancho de la Marquesa: This was an old farm and laundry area. It's located right next to an ancient path called the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental.
- The Museo del Pastor del Agua: This is a planned museum. It will teach people about the traditional ways of using water and linen. It's expected to open in June 2021.
- Bridge of the Five Lights: This bridge crosses the Ciguiñuela River.
- Foal of Shoeing: You can find this old tool for shoeing horses right next to the church.
- Watering Trough: There's also an old watering trough (called a pílon in Spanish) near the shearing house.
Fun Times!
The village celebrates its main holidays on September 22, 29, and 30. These days are dedicated to Saint Michel Archangel.
