Cabins is a small place in Grant County, West Virginia, United States. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

Cabins is located right by the Potomac River, specifically on the North Fork South Branch of the river. It's also found inside a special natural area called the Spruce Knob–Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. This area is part of the much larger Monongahela National Forest, which is a huge protected forest.

What's in a Name?

The name "Cabins" has an interesting past. Over time, this community has been known by a few different names. Some of these names include Cabin, Corner, Corners, and even Hyre's Rock.

In 1965, a group called the Board on Geographic Names officially decided that the community's name would be "Cabins." This group is responsible for naming places in the United States. Even with this official decision, no one is quite sure why the name "Cabins" was chosen in the first place. Its origin is a bit of a mystery!
