Cabo Polonio is a unique, tiny village on the eastern coast of Uruguay. It is located in the Rocha Department. This special place is known for being very natural and off-the-grid.
Cabo Polonio is quite isolated. There are no regular roads that lead to it. It's about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the main highway. You can only get there by walking across sand dunes. Or, you can take special 4x4 vehicles.
The village doesn't have regular electricity or running water. People use wind power or generators for some electricity. The lighthouse, however, gets power from the country's main system. Residents get their water from nearby wells. They also collect rainwater.
Life in Cabo Polonio
Cabo Polonio is a very small community. According to a 2011 count, only 95 people lived there. This makes it a quiet and peaceful place.
Natural Wonders
Cabo Polonio sits on a piece of land that sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean. This land is called a peninsula. One side of the peninsula has big ocean waves. The other side, a bay, is calm and protected.
At the very end of the peninsula, a tall lighthouse stands. It looks over large rocks that tumble into the sea. Three small, rocky islands are also nearby.
Sea Lions and Sand Dunes
Close to the village, you can find a large group of sea lions. They live on the coast. The area also has amazing moving sand dunes. The wind blows the sand, so the dunes slowly change where they are.
Protected Area
The land in Cabo Polonio is special. It is owned by both the Uruguayan government and private people. The government has made it a protected area. This means it's a special place to keep nature safe. It is part of the National System of Protected Areas.
