History of Caddo
In 1976, two schools, Midway School and Chalybeate School, joined together. They formed a new school called East Lawrence Elementary School. Two years later, in 1978, East Lawrence High School was built. Both of these new schools were built in Caddo.
Later, in 1999, East Lawrence Middle School was also created. Since these schools were built, Caddo and the East Lawrence area have grown steadily. Because of this growth and how close they are, Caddo and the nearby community of Midway have become like one big community. Today, many people who live in Caddo work and shop in the nearby city of Decatur.
Becoming an Official Town
People in Caddo have been discussing making it an official town since the 1980s. This means Caddo would have its own local government and rules. In 2011, there was a vote to decide if Caddo should become an official town, but the idea was voted down.
Those who wanted Caddo to become an official town believed it would help the community. They thought Caddo could get money from city taxes and from the TVA. This money could be used for city services like trash pickup or better roads. Some residents also worried that the city of Decatur might eventually take over Caddo if it didn't become its own town.
However, many people were against Caddo becoming an official town. They didn't want to follow new city rules or pay city taxes. Some residents also worried that becoming an official town would change their quiet, country way of life.
