About Cade's County
Cade's County starred the famous Hollywood actor Glenn Ford. He played Sam Cade, the sheriff of Madrid County. This county was a huge desert area in the American Southwest. The show never said which state it was in. It could have been California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, or Arizona.
Sheriff Sam Cade's Background
Sam Cade was a very interesting character. He came from a well-known family in the county. He had served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot. He was also an FBI agent before becoming sheriff. The show did not mention if he had a wife or close family.
Cade and His Deputies
Cade's main helper was J. J. Jackson, played by Edgar Buchanan. Cade had traveled the world and had modern police training. Jackson, however, had spent most of his life in Madrid County. They worked well together to keep the peace. Jackson was a skilled and trusted partner. Cade was in charge, but his team called him "Sam."
They often dealt with tough situations. These included violent miners and people who stole cattle. These problems were similar to those in old Western movies. Cade usually drove a jeep. Many roads in his area were just dirt paths.
Some of Cade's deputies were Native Americans. Another deputy was played by Glenn Ford's son, Pete. His character was also named Pete.
After the Show Ended
After its first season, Cade's County was replaced by the popular show M*A*S*H. Some episodes of Cade's County were released on VHS in 1991. They were called Sam Cade — Marshal of Madrid. A two-part episode was also released as a movie. It was called Slay Ride.
The main music for the show was created by Henry Mancini. An extended version of the theme music appeared on his album.
