Cadwallader Range facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Cadwallader Range is a group of mountains in British Columbia, Canada. It's part of the larger Coast Mountains and is found in the south-central part of the province. This mountain range sits between Anderson Lake to the east and the Hurley River.

The Cadwallader Range is known for Cadwallader Creek, which flows along its northeast side. This creek was once a very important place for gold mining, with famous mines like the Bralorne and Pioneer Mines. There's even a ghost town called Bralorne nearby, which was once a busy mining community.

Naming the Cadwallader Range

The Cadwallader Range got its name from Cadwallader Creek. The creek itself was named after a Welsh prospector named Evan Cadwallader.

Who was Evan Cadwallader?

Evan Cadwallader was a prospector who explored the area in 1865. He was part of a group sent by Governor Seymour to look for places where mining could be successful. Evan later lived in a place called Moodyville.

A post office was even named after him, operating from 1900 to 1902 somewhere along the creek. However, its exact location is not known today.

From Mountains to Range

The name "Cadwallader Mountains" was first used in 1917. Later, in 1951, it was officially changed to the "Cadwallader Range." The name Cadwallader comes from an old Welsh name, linked to a Welsh king named Cadwaladr who lived around 655 to 682 AD.
