Caer Mote is a small, interesting hill located in the northern part of the Lake District area in England. It's close to a village called Bothel in Cumbria. Even though it's a small hill, its top offers a great view of Bassenthwaite Lake.

Caer Mote is special because it has some very old structures on it. These include an ancient earthwork known as "The Battery" and traces of a Roman fort.

What is Caer Mote?

Caer Mote is a hill that stands about 285 meters (920 feet) high. Its highest point is just outside the official boundary of the Lake District National Park. From the top, you can see beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and Bassenthwaite Lake.

The Ancient "Battery"

On the very top of Caer Mote, there is an old structure called "The Battery". This is an earthwork enclosure. An earthwork is a large structure made by shaping the natural ground, often for defense or settlement in ancient times. We don't know exactly how old "The Battery" is, but it's a fascinating piece of history right on the hilltop.

Roman History

Caer Mote also has links to the ancient Romans! To the east of the hill's summit, archaeologists have found signs of a Roman fort. This fort dates back to the 1st century AD, which means it was built almost 2,000 years ago. Roman forts were military camps built by the Roman army to control areas and protect their borders. Finding one here shows that the Romans were active in this part of England a very long time ago.

Exploring Caer Mote with Wainwright

Caer Mote is also famous because it was written about by Alfred Wainwright. He was a well-known British author and illustrator who created detailed guidebooks for hikers exploring the fells (hills) of the Lake District. Caer Mote, or "Caermote Hill" as he called it, has its own chapter in his book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. Wainwright described a circular walking route starting from Bothel. This route goes up the northern summit, which is called St. John's Hill, before reaching Caer Mote.
