History of Café Britt
How Café Britt Started
A man named Steve Aronson started Café Britt in 1985. He was a coffee broker from North America. His idea was to sell roasted Costa Rican coffee to people living in Costa Rica.
At that time, most of the best coffee from Costa Rica was sent to other countries. Steve wanted people in Costa Rica to enjoy their own high-quality coffee too!
Choosing the Name
The name Britt was chosen through a contest. It's a special nod to countries in Scandinavia. These countries, like Sweden and Norway, drink a lot of coffee!
Growing the Company
Café Britt started making chocolates in the year 2000. This was a new and exciting step! In 2001, they opened their first store at Juan Santamaría Airport. This made it easy for travelers to buy their products.
By 2003, they had more stores in hotels where tourists often stayed in Costa Rica. In 2005, Café Britt opened new stores in Peru, the Caribbean, and Chile. This helped them share their products with even more people around the world.
New Leadership
In 2009, Steve Aronson's son, Philippe Aronson, became the president of the company. He took over after his father.
In 2017, the larger company, Grupo Arribada, split into two parts: Morpho Travel Experience and Café Britt. This change allowed Café Britt to focus even more on making and selling gourmet products. They also continued to run their cafés and the popular Britt Coffee Tour. Philippe Aronson is now the CEO of Café Britt.
Delicious Products from Café Britt
Café Britt makes and sells many gourmet products. Their main focus is on coffee and chocolate. Some of their product lines include Café Britt coffee, Britt Chocolates, and Britt Cookies.
They also offer coffee capsules for espresso machines. These are sold under the brand Britt Espresso. You can even buy espresso machines from them!
In 2017, Café Britt opened its first special coffee shop. It's called Britt Café & Bakery. Here, you can enjoy their coffee and baked goods.
Fun Coffee Tours
The Britt Coffee Tour
In 1991, Café Britt started something unique: Costa Rica's first coffee tour! It was like a play that happened right on their coffee plantation.
Today, the "Britt Coffee Tour" is an interactive journey. It teaches you all about how coffee is made, from the plant to your cup. About 50,000 people visit the Britt Coffee Tour every year. More than half a million people have taken the tour since it began!
Tours for Experts
Besides the general tour, there are also special tours. These are made for coffee experts or serious coffee lovers. They go into more detail about how coffee is grown and processed.
Café Britt is one of the companies that has the "essential COSTA RICA" country brand seal. This means they represent Costa Rica well.
Caring for the Environment
Organic Coffee Production
Café Britt has been selling certified organic coffee since 1991. Organic coffee is grown without certain chemicals. Today, the company produces over 200,000 bags of organic coffee each year. A large part of this, about 80%, is sold right in Costa Rica.
Carbon Neutral Certification
Since 2013, Café Britt's coffee and chocolate production in Costa Rica has been "Carbon Neutral." This means they work to balance the amount of carbon dioxide they release into the air. They do this by reducing their emissions and supporting projects that remove carbon from the atmosphere.
