Caffè Nero is a popular coffee shop company. It started in London, England, in 1997. A businessman named Gerry Ford founded it. Today, Caffè Nero has over 1,000 coffee shops. You can find them in eleven different countries, including the UK, Ireland, and the United States. In 2009, Caffè Nero even opened its own place to roast coffee beans. This roastery in London makes sure all their coffee shops worldwide get fresh coffee. Gerry Ford still owns most of the company.

History of Caffè Nero

In 1997, Gerry Ford and a small group of investors bought five coffee shops in London. At the same time, they created their special coffee blend called Classico. This blend has won awards for its great taste. You can still enjoy the Classico blend in every Caffè Nero store today.

In 2001, Caffè Nero became a public company. This meant its shares could be bought and sold on the London Stock Exchange. A few years later, in 2007, the company became private again. Caffè Nero then started to grow internationally. They opened stores in Turkey in 2007 and the UAE in 2009. More countries followed, like Poland in 2012, Cyprus in 2013, and Ireland and the United States in 2014. They also expanded to Croatia in 2017, Oman in 2018, and Sweden.

In 2013, experts from the magazine Which? tasted coffee from five big UK brands. They said Caffè Nero's coffee was the best-tasting.

Caffè Nero continued to grow by buying other coffee businesses. In 2016, they bought Harris + Hoole, which had 43 locations. In 2019, they bought most of the shares in Coffee#1. This chain had 100 coffee shops in Wales and parts of England. In 2022, Caffè Nero bought the rest of Coffee#1.

In 2019, Caffè Nero worked with the drink company Fever-Tree. Together, they started selling two types of espresso and tonic drinks in Caffè Nero shops.

Like many businesses, Caffè Nero faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. They worked hard to manage their costs and keep the business strong. In 2021, a court supported their plans to recover from the pandemic. This helped the company continue its growth.

In January 2022, Caffè Nero secured new funding. This money helped them plan for future growth. It also allowed them to start opening new stores again.

In August 2022, Caffè Nero received a special award. It was called the Princess Royal Award For Outstanding Workplace Training. This award recognized their excellent training programs for employees.

In May 2023, Caffè Nero announced something exciting for book lovers. They would run the Nero Book Awards. These are annual awards for books published in Britain or Ireland. The awards cover four different categories.
