How Fever-Tree Started
Fever-Tree was founded in 2004 by Charles Rolls and Tim Warrillow. Charles was an expert in the gin industry. Tim worked in advertising. They both wanted to make a perfect, all-natural tonic water. They aimed to offer a better option than regular mixers. These regular mixers often had many preservatives and artificial sweeteners.
Early Days and First Product
To find the best ingredients, Tim traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was looking for a special ingredient called quinine. After many months of trying different plant extracts, they launched their first product. This was Fever-Tree Indian Tonic Water in 2005. Their products were soon sold in famous stores like Selfridges and Waitrose.
Growing Bigger
In 2006, a company called London & Lochside invested money in Fever-Tree. This helped the company grow even more. By 2007, Fever-Tree products were available in the United States and Spain. In 2008, they started selling in major UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's and Tesco.
By 2011, Fever-Tree was recognized as one of the fastest-growing drink companies in the UK. They were even listed in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100. Their products were sold in 25 countries that year. Sales from other countries grew a lot, from £1.1 million in 2008 to £4.4 million in 2010.
Becoming a Public Company
In March 2013, the founders sold a part of the company to Lloyds Development Capital. London & Lochside also sold their share. In November 2014, Fever-Tree became a public company. This means its shares could be bought and sold on the London Stock Exchange. The company was valued at £154.4 million at that time. By 2019, its value had grown eleven times since 2014.
Recent Developments
Since then, Fever-Tree has added many new mixers to its range. These include ginger ale, ginger beer, lemonade, and different kinds of tonic and soda water. In January 2022, they launched their products in South Korea. Later that year, Fever-Tree bought Powell & Mahoney mixers for $5.9 million to expand in the US. Charles Rolls also retired from his role at Fever-Tree in 2022.
In July 2024, there was a report that Fever-Tree sponsored the Republican Party Convention in Wisconsin. However, the company later clarified this. They said they only supplied free products to the venue. They did this for many other venues that were already their customers. They were not an official sponsor of the convention.
What's in the Name?
The name "Fever-Tree" comes from its first product, tonic water. Tonic water gets its special flavor from quinine. Quinine is a chemical taken from the bark of the South American cinchona tree.
Long ago, in India, quinine was used as medicine to help with fevers from malaria. People mixed it with soda water and sugar to make it taste better. This was the very first tonic water. The cinchona tree was often called the "fever tree" in India because of its use in treating fevers.
