The Story of Fever-Tree
Fever-Tree was started in 2004 by two friends, Charles Rolls and Tim Warrillow. Charles knew a lot about the gin industry, and Tim worked in advertising. They both wanted to create a perfect, natural tonic water. They aimed to make a fancy mixer without lots of artificial stuff or preservatives.
To find the best ingredients, Tim even traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After many months of trying out different plant extracts, they launched their first product. This was the Fever-Tree Indian Tonic Water in 2005. Soon, their products were sold in famous stores like Selfridges and Waitrose.
In 2007, Fever-Tree started selling its products in the United States and Spain. By 2008, you could find their mixers in big UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's and Tesco.
By 2011, Fever-Tree was one of the fastest-growing drink companies in the UK. Their products were sold in 25 countries around the world. This helped their sales outside the UK grow a lot.
In 2014, the company became public, meaning people could buy shares in it on the London Stock Exchange. This showed how much the company had grown. Since then, Fever-Tree has added many more mixers to its range. These include different types of ginger ale, ginger beer, lemonade, and flavored tonic waters.
In 2022, Fever-Tree started selling its products in South Korea. They also bought another mixer company in the US called Powell & Mahoney. This helped them grow even more in America.
How Fever-Tree Got Its Name
The company's name comes from its very first product: tonic water. Tonic water gets its special taste from a chemical called quinine. This quinine comes from the bark of a tree found in South America called the cinchona tree.
Long ago, quinine was used as medicine in India to help with fevers from malaria. To make it taste better, people mixed it with soda water and sugar. This was how the first tonic water was made! The cinchona tree was often called the "fever tree" in India because of its use in treating fevers. That's where Fever-Tree got its unique name.
