Cairnie Burn is a small river, also called a stream, in Scotland. It starts high up in the Grampian Mountains, specifically in the eastern part called the Mounth. This stream flows mostly towards the northeast. It eventually joins another stream called the Crynoch Burn. Cairnie Burn begins in a wooded area known as Durris Forest, near a historical path called the Elsick Mounth.

A Glimpse into Cairnie Burn's Past

Long ago, Roman legions, who were groups of Roman soldiers, marched through this area. They crossed Cairnie Burn while moving between their camps at Raedykes and Normandykes.

The soldiers chose this route to avoid wet, swampy areas called bogs. They used an old path known as the Elsick Mounth. This path was one of the many ancient routes that crossed the Grampian Mountains.

Cairnie Burn in Poetry

Cairnie Burn has even been mentioned in poems! In 1890, a poet named Caroline Oliphant wrote about it.

Her poem, The Auld House O' Gask, describes the stream beautifully. She wrote about "that winds around the flowery bank of bonnie Cairnie Burn." This shows how lovely the area around the stream was seen to be.
