Cairo is a small, quiet community in Coal County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's not a big city with its own mayor or local government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and people living together without a separate local government. You can find Cairo about seven miles northeast of a town called Coalgate.
How Cairo Got Its Name
Cairo was given its name after a much larger and more famous city: Cairo, Illinois. It's common for places in the United States to be named after other cities or even famous places around the world.
Cairo's Post Office
For many years, Cairo had its very own post office. This was a really important place for the people living there, as it was how they sent and received letters and packages. The post office in Cairo opened its doors on March 28, 1902. It served the community for quite a long time, finally closing on July 15, 1939.
