Calvin Coolidge Irvin (born November 28, 1924 – died November 25, 2017) was an American athlete. He was a talented shortstop in Negro league baseball and later became a successful college basketball coach.

Cal Irvin's Early Life and Baseball Career

Cal Irvin was born in Haleburg, Alabama. He was the younger brother of Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin. Growing up, Cal showed great athletic skill.

He attended Orange High School in New Jersey. After high school, he went to Morgan State University. There, he played both basketball and football, showing his versatility in sports.

Playing in the Negro Leagues

In 1946, Cal Irvin joined the Newark Eagles, a team in the Negro leagues. These leagues were professional baseball organizations for African American players. They existed at a time when Black players were not allowed to play in Major League Baseball.

Irvin played a key role for the Eagles. That year, his team won the 1946 Negro World Series championship. It was a big achievement for him and his teammates. In 1947, he played for another team, the New York Black Yankees.

A Career in Coaching

After his time in professional baseball, Cal Irvin decided to become a coach. He moved into college sports, where he made a lasting impact.

He became the athletic director and head basketball coach at North Carolina A&T State University. He coached there for 18 years, helping many young athletes.

Coaching Success

During his time at North Carolina A&T, Irvin's teams were very successful. They won four championships in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. This showed his strong leadership and coaching skills.

Cal Irvin was recognized for his contributions to sports. He became a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. This honor celebrates people who have made a big difference in sports in North Carolina.
