Choosing Pro Baseball
Mitchell had planned to play college baseball at the University of San Diego. However, the Pittsburgh Pirates picked him in the second round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. He was the 50th player chosen overall. He decided to sign with the Pirates for $1.4 million, which meant he would start his professional career instead of going to college.
Starting His Pro Career
After signing with the Pirates, Cal Mitchell began his journey in professional baseball.
Minor League Journey
He started in 2017 with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Pirates. In 2018, he played for the West Virginia Power in Single–A. He was even named "Player of the Week" and an "All-Star" that year. He hit .280 with 10 home runs and 65 RBIs.
In 2019, he moved up to the Bradenton Marauders in High–A and was an All-Star again. He hit 15 home runs and had 64 RBIs. The 2020 minor league season was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so he didn't play that year.

Making It to the MLB
On May 24, 2022, the Pittsburgh Pirates called Cal Mitchell up to the major leagues! He made his MLB debut that night as a starting right fielder. He got his first MLB hit and RBI with a single. On June 5, 2022, he hit his first MLB home run. A few days later, on June 14, he hit a ground rule double that broke up a "no-hitter" game against the St. Louis Cardinals. This means the opposing pitcher had not allowed any hits until Mitchell's double.
