Calvin David Mitchell (born March 8, 1999) is an American professional baseball player. He plays as an outfielder for the Piratas de Campeche team in the Mexican League. Before this, he played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cal Mitchell's Early Baseball Days

High School Star

Cal Mitchell grew up in San Diego, California. He played baseball all four years at Rancho Bernardo High School. He was a very good hitter, getting many home runs and RBIs (runs batted in). An RBI means he helped a teammate score a run.

Choosing Professional Baseball

After high school, Cal was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. This was a big deal because only the best young players get drafted. He decided to sign with the Pirates and become a professional player. This meant he gave up his plan to play college baseball at the University of San Diego.

Cal Mitchell's Professional Journey

Starting in the Minor Leagues

After joining the Pirates, Cal began his professional career in the minor leagues. These are teams where players develop their skills before reaching the major leagues.

  • In 2017, he played for the Gulf Coast League Pirates.
  • In 2018, he played for the West Virginia Power. He was named an All-Star that year.
  • In 2019, he played for the Bradenton Marauders. He was also an All-Star for this team.
  • The 2020 season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so he didn't play.
  • In 2021, he played most of the season for the Altoona Curve. He then moved up to the Indianapolis Indians.

Reaching Major League Baseball

On May 24, 2022, Cal Mitchell made his big debut in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played as a right fielder. In his very first game, he got his first MLB hit and an RBI. A few weeks later, on June 5, 2022, he hit his first MLB home run.

A famous moment happened on June 14, 2022. A pitcher from the St. Louis Cardinals was pitching a "no-hitter" against the Pirates. This means no one on the Pirates had gotten a hit yet. But Cal Mitchell hit a ground rule double with two strikes, breaking up the no-hitter!

Moving On from the Pirates

Cal started the 2023 season back with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. He played well there, hitting 9 home runs and getting 53 RBIs. He played in two games for the Pirates that year. In September 2023, he left the Pirates organization.

New Teams and Adventures

After leaving the Pirates, Cal Mitchell continued his baseball journey:

  • On November 15, 2023, he signed with the San Diego Padres. He played for their Triple-A team, the El Paso Chihuahuas, in 2024. He had a great year, hitting 22 home runs and getting 70 RBIs.
  • On December 1, 2024, he signed with the Chicago White Sox. He played briefly for their Triple-A team, the Charlotte Knights, in 2025. He was released by the White Sox in April 2025.
  • On April 29, 2025, he signed with the San Francisco Giants. He played for their Double-A team, the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He was released by the Giants in June 2025.

Playing in Mexico

On July 11, 2025, Cal Mitchell signed with the Piratas de Campeche team. This team plays in the Mexican League, which is a professional baseball league in Mexico.
