Joseph Caleb Deschanel (born September 21, 1944) is an American cinematographer and director. A cinematographer is the person in charge of how a movie looks. They decide on the lighting, camera angles, and how the scenes are filmed. Caleb Deschanel has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography six times. This award is also known as an Oscar!
He is part of the National Film Preservation Board, which helps protect important films for the future. He has been married to actress Mary Jo Deschanel since 1972. They have two daughters who are also famous actresses: Emily and Zooey Deschanel.

Early Life and Learning About Film
Caleb Deschanel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father was French, and his mother was American. He grew up following his mother's Quaker religion.
He went to Johns Hopkins University from 1962 to 1966. There, he met Walter Murch, who later became a famous film editor. They even created "happenings," which were like spontaneous performances. Walter Murch encouraged Caleb to study film at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Caleb graduated from there in 1968.
During his time at USC, Caleb was part of a group of film students called "The Dirty Dozen." This group caught the attention of people in Hollywood. After USC, he went to the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory and was part of its very first class in 1969.
His Family Life
Caleb Deschanel joined the American Society of Cinematographers (A.S.C.) in 1969. This is a special group for cinematographers. In 1972, he married actress Mary Jo Weir. They have two daughters, Emily and Zooey, who are both well-known actresses.
