Califa was once a small place in Madera County, California. It was a "former settlement," which means it used to be a community but isn't anymore. Califa was located near a railroad track.

Califa: A Vanished Spot in California

Califa was in Madera County, California. It was about one mile (1.6 km) northwest of a town called Fairmead. The area was 249 feet (76 meters) above sea level. Califa was still shown on maps as late as 1918.

Califa and the Railroad

Califa was important because of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It had a depot, which is like a small train station, or a stop along the tracks. This station was shown on maps from the US Geological Survey as late as 1948.

However, by 1961, things had changed. A big highway, US 99, was made wider. It also got a new connection with State Route 152. Because of these changes, the Califa train station was removed from maps.

The Califa Post Office

Even though it was a small place, Califa had its own post office for a few years. The post office operated from 1912 to 1915. This shows that people lived and worked in Califa during that time.
