Calimero is a fun Italian cartoon about a cute little chicken. He is special because he is the only black chick in his family of yellow chickens. He also wears half of his eggshell on his head! Calimero first appeared on Italian TV on July 14, 1963. He quickly became very popular in Italy.
The characters were created by a company called Organizzazione Pagot. Calimero started out in short cartoon ads for Miralanza AVA soap. These ads were shown all over Italy. The main creators were Nino Pagot, Toni Pagot, and Ignazio Colnaghi. At the end of each ad, it would turn out that Calimero wasn't really black. He was just very dirty! After being washed with the soap, he would become white.
Later, Calimero became an anime series in Japan. There were two different Japanese versions called Calimero (カリメロ). The first one was made by Toei Animation. It aired from 1972 to 1975. The second series, with new stories and characters, was made in 1992. In total, 99 Japanese episodes were made. The first series had 47 episodes, and the second had 52.
These shows mostly followed Calimero and his friends on many adventures. They would solve mysteries and even make documentaries. But their adventures often got them into a bit of trouble! The second series did not get a second season. While English versions of the first two anime series were not officially released, they were shown in other languages. The original short cartoons from the 1970s and a newer CGI series were released in English. The first series also aired in countries like the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain.
A third cartoon series about Calimero started in 2013. This one used computer animation (CGI). Companies from France, Italy, and Japan worked together to make it. This new series was planned to be shown on many TV channels around the world.
