The splendid mariposa lily (scientific name: Calochortus splendens) is a beautiful wild flower found in North America. It's a type of mariposa lily, known for its colorful, bowl-shaped flowers.
Where It Grows
This special lily naturally grows in the coastal mountains and valleys of California and Baja California (which is in Mexico). You can find it as far north as Lake County in California. It likes to grow in different places, including chaparral (areas with dense shrubs) and woodlands.
What It Looks Like
The splendid mariposa lily has a thin stem and only a few leaves.
Its flowers can grow alone or in small groups of up to four. Each flower has smaller, ribbon-like leaves called bracts around it. The flowers are shaped like a bowl and come in different shades of purple, often lavender. There is usually a darker purple spot at the bottom of each petal. The center of the flower might have many white hairs and bright purple pollen.
