Calponia
Scientific classification

The Calponia harrisonfordi is a very special type of spider. It is the only known species in its group, called a monotypic genus. This means it's one-of-a-kind! It belongs to a larger family of spiders known as Caponiidae. These spiders are part of the "true spider" group, or araneomorphs.

This unique spider was first discovered and described in 1993. The scientist who found it was Norman I. Platnick. He decided to name this new spider after the famous film actor Harrison Ford. This was a special way to thank Mr. Ford. Harrison Ford had narrated a documentary for the Natural History Museum in London.

Meet the Calponia Harrisonfordi Spider

The Calponia harrisonfordi spider is quite small. It measures about 5 millimeters long. That's roughly the size of a pencil eraser! This tiny creature is considered one of the oldest types of spiders in its family. It has some features that are very ancient.

What Makes This Spider Special?

Many modern spiders in the Caponiidae family have special legs. Their leg segments, especially at the ends, are often changed. But the Calponia harrisonfordi is different. It has very few of these changes. This makes it more like its ancient ancestors.

Another interesting fact is its eyes. Most spiders in this family have fewer eyes. But the Calponia harrisonfordi still has all eight of its eyes. This is another sign of how primitive it is. Scientists are still learning a lot about how this spider's body works.

Where Does This Spider Live?

This particular spider has only been found in one place in the world. It lives in California in the United States. This makes it an endemic species. This means it is native and unique to that specific area. Scientists continue to study its habitat. They want to understand more about its environment.

What Does This Spider Eat?

Scientists are still learning about the Calponia harrisonfordi's daily life. They don't know everything about its body and how it functions. However, they believe it mainly eats other spiders. This makes it a spider hunter! It's fascinating to think about such a small spider hunting other spiders.
