Calumet is a small place in Ohio, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of Knox Township in Jefferson County.

Calumet is located right next to the Ohio River, just north of the town of Toronto. You can easily get there from Toronto by following North 4th Street or North River Avenue.

History of Calumet

The community of Calumet has an interesting past! Before about 1880, this area was known by a different name: Elliotsville.

Changing Names and the Post Office

The name Calumet became official when a post office was set up there on January 20, 1873. For a short time, the post office name changed back to Elliotsville in 1874. But then, it quickly changed back to Calumet on July 9, 1874. The post office eventually closed down on April 30, 1908.

Factories and Industry

A big factory was built in Calumet in November 1870. This factory made sewer pipes and items from fire clay. Fire clay is a special type of clay that can handle very high temperatures. The factory was updated a lot in 1894.

Over the years, the factory had a few different names:

  • From 1870 to 1878, it was called the Calumet Sewer Pipe Firebrick and Terracotta Works.
  • Then, until 1900, it was known as the Calumet Fire Clay Company.
  • Later, it became part of the American Sewer Pipe Company.
  • Finally, in 1907, it joined the National Fireproofing Company.

By 1880, this factory was one of the largest of its kind along the Ohio River. It made many different products and earned about $90,000 each year. That was a lot of money back then!

Life in Calumet

Besides the factory and buildings for the railroad, Calumet also had a general store. This store was owned by James L. Elliot, who was also the postmaster at one point. There were also many houses for the people who lived and worked in the community. Calumet Station was a stop on the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad in 1910, which helped connect the community to other places.
