History of Calumet Township
Calumet Township was created in 1883. Officials in Lake County decided to form it. They took a six-mile-wide strip of land from North Township. A part of Ross Township was also added to Calumet Township. This included the community of Ross.
Changes Over Time
In 1922, a place called Miller Beach became part of Calumet Township. Before that, it was in Hobart Township. This change happened after a disagreement about money for roads.
More recently, in 2022, the town of Griffith moved. It used to be partly in Calumet Township. Now, all of Griffith is in North Township. This change happened after a public vote and new state laws.
Geography and Communities
Calumet Township covers about 68.71 square miles. Most of this area is land, about 61.38 square miles. The rest, about 7.32 square miles, is water.
Cities and Towns in Calumet Township
Calumet Township has both "incorporated" and "unincorporated" areas.
- An incorporated area is a city or town with its own local government.
- An unincorporated area is managed directly by the township or county.
The main incorporated city in Calumet Township today is Gary. Many communities that used to be separate are now part of Gary. These include Aetna, Miller Beach, Tolleston, and Black Oak. The unincorporated community of Ross is still part of Calumet Township.
As mentioned, a large part of the town of Griffith was in Calumet Township until 2022. On January 1, 2022, all parts of Griffith moved to North Township.
Education in Calumet Township
Students in Calumet Township attend schools run by two different public school districts.
- Most of the city of Gary is served by the Gary Community School Corporation.
- Areas of Gary in Calumet Township that are not part of the main city are served by the Lake Ridge Schools Corporation.
