Who Lived in the Campbell House?

Calvin A. Campbell was a smart man who went to the University of Michigan. There, he became friends with a famous architect named Alden B. Dow. Later, Calvin Campbell joined the Dow Chemical Company. He became a very important leader there. By the 1940s, he was a vice president. In 1949, he became the Secretary of the company's Board of Directors.

When Was the House Built?

In 1939, Calvin Campbell asked his friend Alden Dow to design a house for him. Alden Dow was a well-known architect. The Fred C. Trier Construction Company started building the house that same year. The home was finished in 1940. The Campbell family lived in this house for many years. A small part was added to the house in 1997.

What Does the Campbell House Look Like?

The Calvin A. and Alta Koch Campbell House has two and a half stories. It is shaped like a modified "T" from above. The outside of the house is made of brick and wood panels. It has a sloped roof that goes down on all sides, called a hipped roof.

The house sits on a hill. This means that one side of the top floor opens right onto the ground. On two sides, the second floor hangs out over the first floor. These parts have long rows of windows. There is also a garage attached to one side of the house.

Inside the Campbell House

Inside the house, the first floor has a fun game room. There is also a dining room, a kitchen, and a utility room. The second floor is where the main living areas are. It has a living room, a library for books, and three bedrooms. A fourth bedroom is located on the third level, tucked under a special window area called a dormer.
