Camey Spur (also known as Camey) was a small community in southeastern Denton County, Texas. It was located where Texas State Highway 121 and W Spring Creek Parkway are today. Even though it's not a town anymore, its history is still remembered.
What Was Camey Spur?
Camey Spur started around 1852. It was named after Captain William McKamy. His family gave land for a special railroad track. This track was called the Frisco Spur. It was part of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. The name "Spur" in Camey Spur refers to this railroad line. It's important not to confuse it with another Texas town called Spur, Texas.
Life in Camey Spur
Camey Spur was a busy little place for a while. From 1913 to 1925, it even had its own post office. In 1914, the community had a cotton gin, which is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds. This cotton gin unfortunately burned down in 1925.
The town also had two general stores. These stores sold many different things that people needed every day. At that time, about 30 people lived in Camey Spur. Later, during the 1930s and 1940s, the population grew slightly to 47 people. There were still two businesses operating in the community.
Camey Spur Today
Even though Camey Spur is no longer a town, its memory lives on. In 2024, the nearby city of Frisco, Texas built Camey Spur Park. This park is located close to where the original community once stood. It helps remember the history of this small Texas settlement.
