Cammie King (born August 5, 1934 – died September 1, 2010) was an American actress. She was famous for playing Bonnie Blue Butler in the classic movie Gone with the Wind (1939). Cammie also lent her voice to the young deer, Faline, in Disney's animated film Bambi (1942).

Cammie King's Early Life

Cammie King was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 5, 1934. Her father, W. Cammack King, managed a chemical plant. Her mother, Eleanore King, was a schoolteacher. Cammie had an older sister named Diane, who was also a child actress.

After her parents divorced, Cammie's mother married Herbert Kalmus in 1949. Herbert Kalmus was important because he helped start Technicolor, a company known for making movies in color.

Cammie's Acting Career

Even though Cammie King's acting career was short, she appeared in two very big movies. These were Gone with the Wind and Bambi.

Playing Bonnie Blue Butler

Cammie got the role of Bonnie Blue Butler in Gone with the Wind when she was only four years old. Casting directors looked at 250 children for the part. Her seven-year-old sister, Diane, also tried out.

When Diane was thought to be too old, she told the staff, "My sister looks like me and is only four and she can read lines." Cammie remembered her lines well. For Bonnie's sad death scene, Cammie had trouble keeping her eyes still. So, she wore a special mask to help. An adult who was a little person acted as a stunt double for Bonnie's fall from the horse.

Voicing Young Faline in Bambi

Cammie also provided the voice for the young deer Faline in Disney's 1942 animated movie Bambi. She was supposed to be in a third movie in the early 1940s. However, she got chicken pox on the first day of filming. Because of this, she was removed from the cast.

Thinking about her acting days, Cammie once joked, "I peaked at 5." This meant her biggest acting roles happened when she was very young.

Education and Later Work

After her acting career, Cammie King went to Marymount High School. She then attended the University of Southern California. In 1956, she earned a bachelor's degree in communications.

Later, she worked as a production assistant for a TV show called Climax!. In 1980, Cammie moved to Northern California. There, she had a long career in public relations. This included working for the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce.

In the early 2000s, Cammie King appeared on the TV game show To Tell the Truth. She worked for 40 years as a marketing coordinator for the Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce.

Cammie often attended events with other actors from Gone with the Wind. In 2009, she wrote a small book called Bonnie Blue Butler: A Gone With the Wind Memoir. She mostly sold copies directly to fans at events and online.

Cammie King's Family Life

Cammie King married Walter "Ned" Pollock in 1957. They adopted two children, Matthew and Katharine. Sadly, Ned died from cancer in 1968.

In 1971, she married Michael W Conlon. He adopted her two children. Cammie and Michael divorced in 1975. Michael's father, Judd Conlon, was a musical arranger for many Disney films. These included Alice in Wonderland (1951) and Peter Pan (1953).

Cammie King passed away on September 1, 2010, at her home in Fort Bragg, California. She was 76 years old and died from lung cancer.
