History
What happened in 2001?
Lua error in Module:Location_map at line 420: attempt to index field 'wikibase' (a nil value). On August 3, 2001, Camotán faced a serious problem. The local government declared a "yellow code" alert. This happened because many rural communities were in danger of a severe food shortage.
The main reasons for this crisis were two things. First, there was not enough rain for crops to grow well. Second, the price of coffee around the world dropped a lot. Coffee was a major source of income for many people in the area.
To help, the government of Alfonso Portillo declared a "State of Calamity." This allowed them to get help from other countries. Officially, 48 people were reported to have died. However, some people believed the number was much higher.
Church fire in 2022
In March 2022, the Catholic church in Camotán caught fire. This happened after a strong rainstorm. Lightning struck the church, causing the fire.
The town's mayor, Noe Guerra, asked for help from the national government. He wanted money to rebuild the church. There is no public information yet about the plan to rebuild it.
