Camp Bragg was an important military camp used by the Confederate army during the American Civil War. It was located in what is now Nevada County, Arkansas. This camp was about 23 miles (37 km) southwest of a town called Camden.
From October 1863 to January 1864, Camp Bragg was the main office, or "Headquarters," for the Confederate army's District of Arkansas. After January 1864, another camp called Camp Sumter took its place.
Why Was Camp Bragg Important?
In the fall of 1863, the Confederate army had to leave Little Rock, which was the capital city of Arkansas. Because they left Little Rock, they needed a new main office for their army in Arkansas. This is why Camp Bragg was created.
The camp was probably named after General Braxton Bragg, a well-known Confederate general. Camp Bragg was built in a good defensive spot. It was on a "pine ridge," which is a high area with pine trees. On one side, there was a deep valley, and on the other side, there was a swamp. This made it harder for enemy forces to attack.
